lessons and tuition for
adult beginners
in london |
Magic is immensely popular right now. The Harry Potter books
and films have captured people’s imagination the world
over. On British television we are seeing an explosion of
programs around the area of magic, mind reading, the
paranormal and psychic phenomena. Magicians and
illusionists like Derren Brown and David Blaine are
household names. Why? Because:
- No
matter what age you are MAGIC IS FUN, COOL AND
EXCITING to see
- In
our day-to-day world of the mundane and the normal, People
love to
be SURPRISED AND AMAZED
- By
PERFORMING MAGIC whether on the street, at
restaurants or in just about any kind of social
setting, HEADS TURN
- You
become the CENTRE OF ATTENTION
When performing I often get asked
“Can you teach me some magic?” or “I wish I could
learn to do magic like that!”. In response to this
demand I sometimes work
with new students
in my spare time.
[
Note - all tuition and it's availability is dependant on my
performing timetable and other work commitments at the
time ]
We offer magic tuition on a one-to-one basis for
adults new to the
art of magic and illusion but would like to learn. There are
2 points to make about the magic lessons:
Easy or difficult - secrets
Often beginners ask me how difficult magic
is to learn. Well it really depends on what you will be
performing. There are many fantastic effects you can
perform which are not hard to learn. Many rely on a simple
SECRET to work. Basically this means that you know
something the audience doesn’t; to them your effect can
look absolutely impossible.

| Presentation
/ performance / acting
Learning how an effect or trick works is only half the job.
Whether you intend to perform to a single person or 100 people it is your presentation that is the key to making your
magic
special enough for people
to remember
and talk about long afterwards.
Magic lessons course
structure
These
sessions are intended for beginners to magic. To give you some idea
of the structure - an initial 2 hour session will usually include the following:
1) Sleight of hand techniques and magic principles - Just by learning some key basic moves
and ideas can open up many magic tricks for you in the future.
2) Magic effects that require no difficult moves, but instead rely purely on a SECRET to work. These are ideal for beginners as you can focus on your
presentation and achieving maximum audience impact.
Typically I will demonstrate the effect first with my own presentation. You will learn the effect and then perform it back to me (just as if for your audience). If time permits we can come up with different presentational ideas for the
effect that suit you.

Learning magic for beginners - books
This
page is focused on magic lessons from
professional magicians which is an effective way for a beginner
to learn magic, but due to cost and availability
(someone local and suitable to teach you) this option is not for everyone.
As a keen starting magician
many years ago I wished there were such a thing as magic classes
or a live beginners magician training course to make it easy to learn
magic correctly. In the absence of such resources I (along with many of my
fellow new magicians) began in the old fashioned
way with magic teaching books and written beginners magic
courses.
Here
are some of classic magic teaching texts which have stood the
test of time. For general magic - "The Tarbell Course in magic
(8 volumes)" by Harlan Tarbell and the "The Amateur Magician Handbook" by Henry Hay. For card
magic - "The Royal Road to Card Magic" by Hugard Jean. For
mentalism "13 steps to Mentalism" by Tony Corinda followed by
"Mind, Myth and Magic" by T.A Waters.
Enhancing your magic - for experienced
magicians
If you have any interest in magic,
psychological effects and
illusion and you live in the UK you would be hard pressed not to
have heard of Derren Brown. It is fair to say that Derren with
his initial tv series 'Mind Control' delivered an electric shock
through the magic community as well propelling our art in front
of new and sophisticated audiences.
So to complete the book section I will
include "Pure Effect" by derren brown. This is not for
beginners and not about learning magic tricks. Instead it's
primary focus is the
psychology and presentation of magic and is essential reading
for any magician looking to increase the impact of their magic
as an experience for their audiences.
